Celebrate Accomplishments

This is really just a particular way of cultivating positive thoughts, but it is an important one.

There are things you have done in the past that were really important accomplishments, whether it was learning to ride a bike, being the first one from your family to graduate from college, completing a big project, or winning the girl or guy of your dreams. Are things like this just ancient history? They shouldn't be. They represent good things in our lives that we do well to remember.

Most of us have plans and projects going on right now. Some might be well-defined projects, like finishing the basement or a project at work. Others are so mundane we might not even notice: getting the kids off to school on time each day, eating together as a family four times this week, being five minutes early to every appointment, cleaning out the garage, balancing your checkbook. Things like this are accomplishments, too, but while we often take time to complain when the checkbook takes a long time to balance, we may not even notice the times it goes quickly. You don't have to throw a big party for every small success, but at least time the time to notice and feel a little satisfaction. The bigger accomplishments really are worth a real celebration. We used to take our daughters out for dinner at the end of the school year--we all had fun, and we thought it was important to call attention to their accomplishment.

Some people plan to reward themselves for finishing tasks they don't particularly want to do, like having a small dish of ice cream once I get the house clean, or reading a little after I spend an hour on the taxes. Rewards (little celebrations) can be great tools, not only to motivate you to get the unpleasant task done, but to lift your spirits for the rest of the day by calling attention to the positive.

There are a number of additional things you can do, as well. Read more.
